Updates regarding Port-Margot where our sister parish Ste. Marguerite is located:

Thursday, January 14, 2010:

Although the citizens of Port-Margot are full of anxiety regarding the catastrophic earthquake which destroyed the capital city of Port-au-Prince on Tuesday, there appears to be no damage in Port-Margot itself.

People are sleeping outside of their homes for fear of aftershocks. Nearly everyone in Port Margot have family or friends in Port-au-Prince but are unable to reach them. Radio and television stations are not able to broadcast.

Pere Michelin reports that 90% of Port-au-Prince has been destroyed including the cathedral and seminary. Those religious killed in the quake include the archbishop, 11 seminarians and 3 priests.

January 16, 2010

Refugees from Port-au-Prince are moving to the North and this is putting strain on the resources at Ste. Marguerite.  Pere Michelin was in Port-au-Prince yesterday to pick up some of his family.  Fourteen people returned with him and are staying with his brother in Cap-Haïtien.

The clinic at Ste. Marguerite will be used to support relief efforts. Pere Michelin has a doctor starting Monday and is coordinating relief work through the Cap Haitien Health Network to receive patients. Two pediatricians will be there this month to care for children.

The Saint Malachy Dental Mission team of 12 people, scheduled for deployment in March 2010, can be expanded.  The team could use the addition of three medical doctors.

Money is needed at Ste. Marguerite for food, water, medicine and fuel to support the expanding community and relief effort.

January 20, 2010

Port Margot – people are moving north from PAP.  St. Marguerite is taking in refugees.  The clinic needs to get ready for all of the patients. Pere Michelin has lost a lot of people – aunt, cousins, friends.  He has moved 14 relatives from PAP to live with his brother in Cap Haitien.

Today’s aftershocks – still not felt in the north.  Not any additional damage in PAP.

There were 20 people in PAP who were from Port Margot who were killed, according to Pere Michelin.

The following map and link show the relationship between the epicenter, the capital city of Port-au-Prince and our sister parish of Ste. Marguerite in Port-Margot.
